From the Principal

Dear families

We are now deep into Term 3 and our students are completing key assessment tasks in many learning areas. It is great to see our students demonstrate their understanding of key concepts and their proficiency at skills being taught.

Around 50 students have been rehearsing over the last 5 weeks for Alice Can Dance. Alice Can Dance brings together students from all of the government schools in Alice Springs for a shared evening of dance. The performance is on Friday 13th September and tickets are currently on sale from Araluen. We are very excited to see the finished show.

Our Year 9 students are gearing up for their first week of Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Week 9. Students complete two weeks of VET over Term 3 and 4 to get a taste of what VET is like and how it is organised. This prepares them to understand and be able to take advantage of the more substantial VET opportunities that are available in Year 10 at Centralian Senior College.

Thank you to all of our families who provided us with feedback through the School Survey tool over recent weeks. We are starting to dig into and seek to make sense of this feedback, which will inform how we move forward as a school and what we focus on to continue improving.

We have been holding a number of transition visits for Year 5 and 6 students as well as school tours for prospective families. These events are important to support our young people and their family members to confidently make a smooth transition into Year 7 in 2020. At the same time, our Year 9s have been participating in transition visits to Centralian Senior College, so that they are also able to make the transition with confidence. Thank you for promoting these events amongst your friends and families. The next step for us is distributing enrolment forms for 2020 entry which we will start to do over the coming months.

With thanks,

Paul van Holsteyn
Principal

School news and updates

Centralian Senior College Information Evening

Centralian Senior College have their Information Evening for 2020 from 5.30-7.00pm on Wednesday 11th September. We strongly encourage all of our Year 9 students and families to attend.

Clontarf Corner

Term 3 is flying by, and 7 weeks have already passed. The last few weeks have been typically busy at Clontarf, with a lot of after school activities, morning trainings, delicious lunches and as always, good competition within the academy room.

Student of the week

A new initiative this term is “the student of the week award” for each year level. The prize is a cinema voucher, this is awarded to the student who has done good work, showed improvement or just really tried in class throughout the week. In Week 6 the winners were:

  • Year 7- Leroy Burdett
  • Year 8- Ozzie Boko
  • Year 9- Kingsley Tilmouth

Congratulations fellas and keep up the good work.

Morning Trainings

The last 2 weeks we have started to split morning trainings into a mixture of AFL and Rugby. This has been well received. The fellas are enjoying the mix up, and we are also getting some new faces joining us in the morning. Schaylen has been looking after the rugby drills, with either Cheyne, Damien or Tom on AFL. As always we’ve enjoyed a sit down breakfast afterwards.

It has been great to see, boys making the effort to get out of bed early, to come to morning trainings, even just to help cook. And that is exactly what the aim is. Awesome stuff boys!

After school activities

Our after school activities are always popular with the boys. In Week 6 we had the opportunity to go out to Yirara to play Oz Tag. The game was played with great spirit, and was exciting to watch. It was great to have some boys that we haven’t seen much attend.

Right Tracks Visit

Over the last 2-3 weeks we were lucky to have Ian MacAdam and Darren Talbot from the Right Tracks program. They visited each year level during contact time and did some awesome work with the fellas. Everyone definitely benefited from the visit. We can’t thank them enough and we look forward to their next visit next term.

Year 7 & 8 sleep over with Schaylen

During Week 6, Schaylen hosted a sleepover in the academy room with 6 boys. The fellas had a great night, including a great dinner at Epilogue followed by a movie at the cinema.

Upcoming events

  • Year 7 movie night
  • Table tennis competition
  • Katherine footy carnival in week 9
