From the Principal

Ms Cassie O’Bree

Hello – Werte!

That’s a wrap! What an incredible year of learning. This week we celebrate all of our hard work with some fun activities. I am just about to go and run around in our annual colour smash- which should be super fun! We also get to celebrate with our Year 9’s on Tuesday at their celebration evening where we will say farewell and wish them all the very best in their Senior Years of schooling. We know that Centralian Senior College will take good care of you all.

Welcome and congratulations to the new CMS Leadership Team for 2022- Assistant Principal - Wellington Pasi and Senior Teachers - Rajinder Uppal, Cassie Wallace, Emma Forrester, Clarence Jeanny and Emily Webster. Our school is in good hands, and it is fantastic to see that these positions are filled internally with experienced and dedicated CMS staff members.

We say farewell to our Assistant Principals – Ben Balmer, Laryssa Montgomery and Simon Rowlands who have made an incredible impact in their time at Centralian Middle School. Also farewell to our incredible teachers and support staff – Joanne Dermody, Linda Lau, Frances Wilden, Nat O’Connor, Oli Johns, Jeremy Cook, Michelle Pinto and Tash Mavec - wishing you all the very best on your next adventures.

Reports are currently being checked and finalised and will be posted home at the end of this week. Please let us know what you think about our new reports!

Thank you to our school council members who have dedicated their time and service- I appreciate your support and input in the ongoing development of CMS. We have some exciting projects in the works with plans around upgrading our school oval, working with Food Ladder to get a new hydroponic greenhouse for our VET studies and also revisiting our schools master plan for landscape development. It would be great to have some new council members next year! Please get in touch if you would like to join us.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday!

School news and updates

End of the Year Awards Presentation

In Week 9, we had our End of Year Assembly and celebrated our student’s achievements for this school year. Here are a few photos of the event.

Colour Splash 2021

What a great way to all come together and celebrate the last week of school for 2021. Here are a couple of the highlights of Colour Splash 2021.

Student Leadership

Last Wednesday our 2021 student leaders celebrated their hard work and commitment at a special lunch hosted at the Water Tank Café. From pink chai lattes to colour changing teas, to lamb wraps and pancake stacks, our student leaders had a delicious time.

Lunch time conversation included the issues of over consumption within our society, future challenges facing their generation and possible projects for next year’s school leaders to undertake.

It has been an honour to work with this young team over the past year, and I look forward to seeing what amazing work they will do and challenges they will overcome as young leaders in the future.

Christmas @ CMS

CMS found some Christmas spirit this week... We challenged our classes to explore how different cultures celebrate Christmas around the world. What's your favourite? Zorba? Rotten potatoes or KFC? Advent calendars? Cookies? Christmas trees? The Stars room is also next level - with a fireplace and a full santa sleigh!

Year 7

7.1 visit to Headspace

We went to visit Headspace in town. It was fun and we met new people, one of the people who work there gave us a tour. We also got a free shirt and hat. The people are nice there. Headspace is a good place to talk about your feelings and problems with people who can help. There are fidgets and a hangout room and there is another place with lava lamps and other stuff. It was fun and great, you should go one time when you are free. It is open Monday to Friday.

From Ben Balzer

Year 7’s swimming pool day

To celebrate a fabulous year, all the year 7’s students enjoyed a pool day. Lunch was provided and everyone got to enjoy the company of new friends and old.

Year 8

Maths

Year 8s have been studying statistics and this week 8.3 learnt about the difference between a sample and a census with the help of a very large jar of m&ms.

Year 9

Ethics Olympiad

Congratulations to the nine students who participated in the Ethics Olympiad this term: Marlo Wall, Spencer Twohig, Caleb Woolford, Georine Kate Bendillo, Max Barron, Thea Barron, Oliver Phelps, Harper Raja and Aquilla Van Der Pasch. This is an Australia-wide competition in which teams are required to provide clear, concise and respectful discourse around interesting ethical cases. Our teams competed extremely well against tough competition from teams across South Australia. Our ‘blue’ team - Max, Georine, Spencer and Marlo – have been invited to compete in the Australasian finals in February 2022. Well done CMS!

Utnenge

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Utnenge. We have been busy baking, creating, and decorating. We have even been doing Christmas in English and Maths.

Stars Foundation

In Week 7 of school, Centralian Middle School Stars had their first annual End of Year Celebration Night. We had so many families and staff come to support our fantastic young women, celebrate our first year in Alice Springs and to celebrate our award winners for 2021, as well as saying farewell to our graduating Year 9 seniors as they head off to Senior College next year. A great night was had by all and all our students who were involved did such a fantastic job. It has been such a big year for Stars here at CMS, forming relationships, building the program and creating many memories. After such a deadly 2021, we can’t wait to see what 2022 brings!

Clontarf Corner

Alice Springs Turf Club Opportunity Continue To Be A Winner!

On Saturday October 30th October, students from Yirara, Centralian Senior and Middle Academies had the chance to earn some money again by manning the carpark at the Alice Springs Turf Club's Derby Day event.

This involves greeting the patrons as they enter Pioneer Park then directing them to the appropriate parking position to ensure a constant and orderly flow of traffic.

The event was well attended by the good people of Alice Springs so the fellas had a constant flow of traffic throughout the day to look after, which they did exceptionally well. Greeting people on entry, directing vehicles and parking them in a neat and orderly fashion. In addition to the guys in the carpark from the three academies, it was brilliant to see some of our Central Region alumni employed by the Turf Club and working during the day. Jamahl and Eddie, pictured with the carpark crew, have been working casually before, on and after race days.

We look forward to the next event and thank the Turf Club for their continued support.

NT Business Excellence and Customer Service Event

The Clontarf Foundation was nominated for two awards at the NT Business Excellence and Customer Service event earlier this term.

Cheyne Miles, Josh Mapstone and I attended the awards ceremony on behalf of the Central Region team. Clontarf had been nominated as Finalists and Highly Commended in two categories:

NT Best Business Collaboration and NT Best Customer Experience Not for profit category.

NT Best Business Collaboration award was in partnership with Yeperenye Shopping Centre, who have been amazing supporters of the Clontarf Foundation for the past 14 years. The NT Best Customer Experience Not for Profit Award was nominated by a valued Clontarf member parent Ms Barbara Clifford. Congratulations to the Central Region team for your nominations and being recognised for your contribution to service in Business in the Northern Territory! Well done to all involved.

Movie Madness

Last week nine of our year 8 cohort were treated to an afternoon at the movies as an incentive for their efforts in class! These fellas had been handpicked by the teachers week to week, with awards being given for ‘Deadliest Bloke’, a ‘Leadership Award’ and ‘Major Attendance Improvement’. These lads were able to celebrate their awards together as they went to watch Venom: Let there be carnage! Well done fellas.

Clean Up Morning with Mayor Matt Paterson

On Friday 3rd of December, Alice Springs academies conducted a clean-up morning with new Mayor Matt Paterson at the southern end of the Todd River. COMMUNITY NT Central Academies December 2021.

The day started with Mayor Matt Paterson introducing himself to members and congratulating them on being a part of clean-up morning. The Mayor provided cleaning equipment, assisted with clean-up, rubbish collection and later had breakfast with academy members. Centralian Middle School and Centralian Senior College members did an amazing job cleaning up and removing rubbish, where they filled 15 bags and leaving the area in a much better state. The message around clean-up day was to look after our community, where we live and got to school. A special thanks to Yirara Academy staff for cooking breakfast and providing water, champions.

Clontarf End of Year Camp

Last week on Thursday and Friday the year 9s finally got to have their end of year camp after the original Darwin trip was cancelled. Although it didn’t replace Darwin, the 2 days in Alice was a great reward for their hard work throughout their time at CMS.

Some the activities were 10 pin bowling, go karts at Yirara, golf driving range, Venom at the cinema, swimming at Big 4 & Town Pool and a great lunch at Uncle’s Tavern. As we’ve come to expect from these 15 young men, they represented themselves and the school brilliantly. A fantastic enjoyable few days!

Community Announcements

Guts Dance Central Australia

For the month of December we are running a fundraiser campaign for a program close to our hearts.

https://www.gutsdance.org.au/bbb21-fundraiser

The Brave Bodies training program was created to address a need for accessible avenues for dance participation and training for young people in our local community. The program is aimed at female identifying and non-binary young people between the ages of 12-18, from varied cultural backgrounds, who may otherwise not have the means or opportunity to engage in dance related activities outside of school. As part of the program, each week GUTS facilitators pick up and drop off the participants and provide food and uniforms for each young person.

We introduced this program for the first time this year with help from NT Government and Regional Arts Australia and we learnt plenty. Now, we want to keep the program running in 2022 and we're asking you to help.

Help us raise $6,000 to secure the program until mid-2022! More info and our donations page thru link in bio. All donations over $2 are tax-deductible. Please donate now if you can. Every bit makes a massive difference!
