From the Principal

Werte!

Term 1 break is just around the corner. I hope you all take this time around Easter to enjoy some down time surrounded by your family and friends. It's been a big term for all of us.

Harmony Day was celebrated by our community on Friday last week. Mr Ryan and Hemraz our counsellor worked with our students to create a beautiful tree sculpture that is now proudly displayed in the breezeway. Classes were challenged to design an activity that celebrated the theme of 'everyone belongs'. There is strength in our diversity and it was a true celebration of the many cultures represented in our school.

School news and updates

Congratulations CMS!

Centralian Middle School is 1 of 3 NT Government schools announced as a high progress school in this year's My Schools report!

The school's progress has been attributed to their focus on engaging students in rich, real and rigorous learning activities and assessments, and of course, the strong relationships and connections that their passionate educators are cementing with their students.

Introducing our new Canteen Manager!

Welcome to Ms Linda our new canteen manager. Ms Linda is supported by our hard working students every day who are also being trained in customer service skills. What a team!

CMS is looking for Tutors

Battle of the School Bands

We had Battle of the School Bands at CMS last Friday! So much fun and so many inspiring young musicians. Congrats to Mulga Bore Area School for taking out the win!

Year 8

8.1 students have had the chance to participate in a lot of very fun activities this Term, here’s a few photos of what they have been up to.

8.6 students cracking codes to access the cure for the Black Death (lollipops).

Year 9

Science

Year 9 Science has been continuing the focus on our body's coordination and homeostasis - how our body responds to changes, to keep its balance and set-points. We have...

  • had volunteers deliberately create change in their bodies (by going for a run) and observed how their bodies first increase and then slow down their oxygen intake and how they try and cool down
  • dissected the boss body organ - the brain - and one of the organs in the endocrine system – the kidney. (They were both from a sheep.) The brain's fatty nerve cells and the kidney's filtration system were quite clear. STudents who didn't wish to dissect created origami versions of these organs.

Currently Year 9s are researching a disease, a condition of their choice that happens when the body can't keep its homeostasis / balance.

Next: we'll be looking at bacteria and fungi, and how to keep the bad ones out of our bodies

Work Experience

Aesha, Alys, Nathan and Mr G headed out to Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia (RDAA) today for the students’ first session of their Work Experience program. A fun and successful day!

Home Economics

9.2 had a great session with Mr G demonstrating how to roll sushi. Amazing results all round.

VET Conservation & Ecosystem Management

Our group has been finishing of their Work Safely theory and starting their Support Nursery Work unit. We even had a visit from Stephen Ryan on a brief introduction to small engine maintenance.

Our excursions have been to...

  • Arid Zone Research Institute (AZRI) to see their horticulture blocks and how this industry is maintained. We were lucky enough to see the Rural Operations class running out there and be introduced to the work they are undertaking.
  • In week 7, we headed to the Alice Springs Desert Park to get a behind the scenes look at a botanical nursery - and all the hygiene and recording that goes along with this.

As temperature is starting to cool (yay!) in the mornings and we can lengthen our time outside, our group has been busy practising their pre-start checks on the brush cutters and learning to work within small teams. Last week we helped out the Westside Community Gardens, using brush cutters and rakes to help clear their site of buffel and couch grasses. Thanks to Kaz Phillips for your time.

Thanks to the following people for their support of our program...

  • Stephen Ryan (small motors troubleshooting)
  • Danielle Brown (Rural Operations trainer, for showing around AZRI)
  • Bryce Shannon (from Alice Springs Desert Park's botany area, our nursery tour guide)
  • Kaz Phillips (ALEC, Westside Community Gardens)

Clontarf Corner

"Mindfulness Mondays"

Students from Centralian Middle School have been out adventuring after-school with some "on bike meditation" out on the trails. It has proven a welcomed hit with the young men from Clontarf this term.

These students have earned their place through commitment to their schooling and Clontarf morning trainings.

We encourage everyone to soak up some of this beautiful weather coming up and head outdoors.

For now, we'll let these beautiful smiles tell the story!

Undoolya Lookout

27 of our students and six staff overcame the early morning heat and headed for the trails at Clontarf morning training. The group thoroughly enjoyed the challenge hiking up Mt Undoolya lookout, and were rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of Alice Springs

Leading up to the activity, students helped prepare healthy breakfast packs to enjoy out on the trail. Wonderful leadership, life skills, and initiative, boys.

The Batman

In term 1 this group of lads earnt a free cinema voucher to go watch ‘The Batman’! They had been hand chosen week to week by their teachers as acknowledgment for their efforts in class and leadership shown around the school.

“The movie was very good, it had very good action! I really loved it when Batman saved the good people from the water! I think the Joker may be in the next film!” – Riley Swan (Yr 9 Clontarf Academy Member)

Well done fellas!

Brendo’s Boxing Gym Session!

The fellas have been pushed to the limits with a high intensity and technique boxing session with Brendo. Learning some basic boxing combinations have also given their brains a solid workout with a lot of co-ordination and timing involved in the session. The boys loved finishing off with a solid arm wrestling competition after feeling super strong after the workout.

Meet Malakai!

Malakai attends Centralian Middle School in year 8 and is enrolled in the Clontarf program. Malakai has been interested in paid work since enrolling in Clontarf last year, and recently secured work at IGA as a Store Person, through the help of his mentors.

When asked today about securing the position, he told Clontarf, with a beam of pride across his face - "I am excited about my first job, to learn new skills, and to now help more with chores around home in future"

Congratulations, Malakai. You are leading the way, standing tall, and taking charge of your future.

Stars Foundation

In celebration of International Women’s Day last week, our Stars students were given the opportunity to assist community artist Tammy Cornthwaite with her mural at Flynn Drive Oval!

The mural, in homage to all talented female cricketers, was unveiled in Alice Springs Town Council Pop-Up Park! The pop-up park is open till 8pm so make sure to get on down to check out the activities, food vans and mural!

Lastly, a massive thank you to Tammy for inviting our Stars students to assist in this awesome project. Not only have we learnt about different art techniques, but also about how we can #Breakthebias!

Young women from our Stars Academy had a fabulous time at the “Girls on Country Day” at the Telegraph Station. Thanks to Katie at Be.ME Movement Education and our wonderful Stars staff for helping our girls connect with each other and with culture.
